“Being Present Where It’s Hardest”: The Salvation Army’s Ministry to Kharkiv’s Children Amid War

The Salvation Army’s ministry in Ukraine is especially important today, as the country is going through difficult trials of war. One vivid example of such dedication is the work of the Salvation Army Corps in Kharkiv — a frontline metropolis that lives under constant threats every day. Despite the danger, the Salvationists continue to support the local community, especially its most vulnerable members — children. Here, a simple yet profoundly deep principle is embodied: being present where it is hardest.

An important part of this ministry is organizing summer day camps for children aged 6 to 14. This is not just recreation, but an opportunity to give children a sense of childhood, even amid the hardships of war. The camp program is engaging and full of activities: interactive games, creative workshops, and outdoor walks. Children also receive meals and treats, which adds joy and creates an atmosphere of care and warmth.

Special attention is given to safety. A shelter has been set up for the children, where they can stay during air raid alerts. This helps them feel protected and makes it easier for them to take part in the activities. Parents, in turn, can work with greater peace of mind, knowing their children are in a safe environment, surrounded by care and support.

The frontline is very close, but this does not stop the ministry. On the contrary, the very proximity of danger strengthens the Salvationists’ resolve to act. They remain faithful to their calling — to be where people need help the most. Their actions embody the words of Scripture: “We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.” (Romans 15:1). It is this love and self-sacrifice that become a source of hope for many families in Kharkiv.
